Abstract:

High speed rail lines are being constructed or planned among other transportation modes in Korea. They are expected to contribute to alleviate already serious intercity traffic congestion problems caused by the relative lack of prior investments on transportation infrastructure. This paper explains planning issues and methodology for the national high speed rail network in Korea. Planning process of the national high speed rail network in Korea based on the link efficiency and the network design problem concept is described. Long term transportation environments, feasibility of a high speed rail line, impacts of a high speed rail on other inter-city transportation modes and freight transport are explained. The details of inter-city demand forecast and economic and financial analysis for one of the high speed rail lines, the Seoul-Pusan high speed rail line, are also reported.
