Abstract:

To ensure that characterization of the Yucca Mountain site is conducted in an environmentally safe and sound manner, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has developed and implemented a comprehensive program that ranges from the acquisition of Federal and State permits to the reclamation of disturbed lands. Among other elements of this program are the following: Identification of relevant environment regulations, identification of potential environmental impacts, monitoring for potentially significant adverse impacts and mitigation of any impacts that may occur, management of hazardous wastes, waste minimization, and environmental compliance auditing.
