Abstract:

The design of the high level-waste package reflects the needs of the repository design and site conditions. As the program moves into the Advanced Conceptual Design (ACD) phase, different Waste Package (WP) concepts are being reviewed. In support of the licensing of the WP and Engineered-Barrier System (EBS), a 'Robust' WP concept is being exploded. In addition to the standard engineering design techniques of providing engineering margins, a probabilistic performance analysis approach will also be investigated. The 'Robust' design is based on a multi-barrier concept in which each barrier will contribute to the overall performance. The system will be engineered to satisfy the Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations with sufficient margin to provide adequate confidence that compliance will be demonstrated.
