Part of: High Level Radioactive Waste Management 1993

Abstract:

An underground structure known as X-tunnel was investigated for the viability as an underground deep based missile system that included the capability to maintain survivability following a nuclear attack. Examination of this underground facility in the vicinity of Yucca Mountain that has been subjected to a nearby moderate size earthquake indicated little or no damage to the facility. This photogeologic reconnaissance affirmed that the potential for damage to underground facilities is moderated and attenuated by depth below the ground surface.
