Abstract:

Two distinctive modes of failure dominate the failure of stiffened plates and shells, viz. the short-wave local mode and the long-wave overall mode. A new finite element technique which would simplify the analysis of nonlinear mode interaction that occurs in stiffened structures is proposed. The technique is based on embedding the local buckling deformation in an appropriate shell element. Preliminary results indicate that the proposed methodology holds much promise.
