Abstract:

During recent earthquakes, severe damage have been reported in many bridge structures. Regardless of many damaged structures, methods to identify damage of structures are still limited and based on the engineer's intuitive judgments. This paper hence proposes a more systematic approach to estimate damage of a bridge structure. Structural properties needed for damage estimation are evaluated through system identification and probability concept is adopted to include uncertainties related with structural responses and capacities. The suggested method is applied to two bridge structures as numerical examples and the expected damage under future ground excitation can be used as a guide to bridge maintenance.
