Abstract:

The challenges to a bridge analyst in defining abutment boundary conditions and the current state of the practice are presented. Variables within the abutment system are defined and discussed briefly. A comprehensive one-half scale abutment testing program currently underway at U.C. Davis and funded by CALTRANS is described.
