Better Ways to Update Trip Matrices

Abstract:

Updating origin-destination (OD) trip matrices usually involves considerable survey costs, so engineers are often forced to use dated OD information, which can seriously undermine the basis of their analysis. MVA systematica, supported by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, developed an approach to updating matrices that limited the need for surveys. The method gives explicit consideration to the inherent variability of traffic data, which is vital for resolving errors. The estimation procedure is formulated stratigically and uses the Maximum Likelihood methods.
