Abstract:

Improvements in ductility and toughness by adding steel fibers to the shotcrete mix are sufficient to enable steel fibers to be used as replacement for steel mesh reinforcements. Steel fiber reinforced shotcrete can be applied with conventional equipment, both for the dry shorcreting method and for the wet one. Bending tests have been conducted to determine the influence of the steel fibers on flexural strength and toughness. Various fiber types have different effects on the composite behavior and can be characterized on the basis of the toughness indices. Their influence on the concrete properties can be recorded in the so-called 'Identity Charts' for fiber types.
