Abstract:

Modeling of flows in tidal marshes requires modifications to the classical equations of open channel flow. In this study, the authors formulate an equivalent continuum model for tidal marsh flows. The velocity derived from this approximation is a bulk velocity, similar to the Darcy velocity in groundwater flow, because it does not represent the actual path of a fluid particle. Modeling marsh flow as a continuum avoids the problem of describing the turbulence behavior between stems which has not been resolved for densely packed vegetation.
