Abstract:

The Outpost Service and Construction Robot (OSCR) is proposed as the prime mover of a comprehensive, synergistic approach to extraterrestrial surface construction, mining and transportation which is a significant improvement over reference Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) methods. The OSCR's method of anchoring itself to the ground prior to moving construction implements is an efficient solution to the poor performance of familiar tractor-like vehicles in low gravity environments. The new approach not only can perform the required construction and mining tasks with an extremely simple and small complement of equipment, but it squarely addresses an important and often ignored issue, namely, supportability.
