Abstract:

The response of a structure to load is evidence of what the structure is; of the materials, members, connections and form of the structure. Response is evidence as well of the condition of a structure. As a structure deteriorates its response to load will change, and this change can be used to monitor structural conditions. Condition monitoring of structures by modal analysis has been applied with success in three laboratory studies. A central feature of the method is the formation of a database of modal parameter changes for expected deterioration events.
