Abstract:

The results of a 1983 safety evaluation of Gibraltar Dam indicated that the dam did not meet seismic safety standards. A remedial scheme involving the addition of a roller compacted concrete (RCC) gravity buttress against the downstream face of the existing dam was designed and constructed. This paper discusses the final design and construction, including features of the strengthening buttress, the RCC mix design and quality control program, construction facilities and methods, and experiences gained during this unusual construction project.
