Abstract:

Evaluation of seismic response of a soft surface layer is the essence in a design of a lifeline in this layer. For this purpose, a quasi-three dimensional ground model was developed by the authors. In this model, a surface layer is modeled by a horizontally spread finite-element-net with its nodes supported by the Winkler-type springs. Some important simplifications are adopted in the present approach to take account of irregular shape and profile of a surface layer efficiently. This paper describes review of these assumptions so that the present method can be properly used in practice.
