Abstract:

This paper discusses the earthquake design of the Los Angeles Metro. The design earthquake parameters are presented and discussed in light of the behavior of buried structures subjected to earthquake movements. The authors describe and illustrate a new design approach whereby the structure is subjected to earthquake deformations rather than pseudo loads. Finally, results of computer modeling showing that the approach produces conservative designs are presented.
