Abstract:

The proliferation of construction technology and the characteristics of technology information, such as complexity, interdependency, etc., pose the need for a well-organized technology information system with an integrated, hierarchical data structure. A new object-oriented information representation model, based on the semantic data model, is presented as a solution. It consists of three main hierarchies (constructed products, materials, and equipment) which are integrated laterally with construction methods to provide the required technology information for design and construction planning decisions in a manner that supports the changing needs during the various design and construction planning stages. A prototype implementation of the model using a hypertext system is also described.
