Abstract:

Results of experimental investigations of fingered preferential flow are combined into a concise, conservative engineering methodology for predicting pollutant transport through fingered flow paths. An example comparing predicted groundwater loading of naphthalene using an EPA screening model and the proposed finger flow model illustrates the dramatic impact of fingered preferential flow on the loading of pollutants to groundwater aquifers.
