Abstract: Determination of the overall factor of safety against sliding is an important aspect in concrete dam design. Limit equilibrium methods have serious limitations. A method for determining the factor of safety using elasto-plastic finite element analysis is presented. Using this approach, the stability of a dam on a rock mass with a horizontal seam located at various depths is analyzed.
