Abstract:

In this paper, an approach of optimal real-time control of hydroelectric power plant operations is presented. The methodology is based on a dynamic programming technique where the original problem is formulated as a two-level optimization problem. This approach has been applied to solve a hourly based daily scheduling of a hydroelectric power plant in China. The significant economic benefits in terms of water consumption savings have been gained in comparison of the optimal results to conventional scheduling. Sensitive analyses were conducted to study the impact on the benefits due to errors in the characteristic curves and demand forecasts.
