Abstract: Discussion was made, on the basis of field data, on the applicability of the formula for local rate of sediment transport due to combined action of waves and currents presented by Watanabe et al. (1986). Criteria for the direction of wave-induced net sediment transport were investigated in relation to sediment transport modes and the sheet flow movement was found to be significant in the field. Appropriate values of the coefficients in the sediment transport rate formula were evaluated using both field and laboratory data obtained under realistic conditions encountered on natural beaches.
