Abstract:

Suspended sediment loads were examined at the three time scales of time-series-averaged, wave-by-wave and instantaneous during the wave cycle. Field measurements recorded on a natural beach at Apollo Bay in southern Australia indicated that each of these time scales have to be treated differently. Instantaneous concentrations could not be adequately predicted unless the boundary layer thickness or eddy diffusivity was allowed to vary during the wave cycle.
