Abstract:

The government of The Netherlands decided in the summer of 1990 to maintain the coastline at the position of 1990. This will be done mainly by artificial beach nourishment. The costs will be paid by the national government. The purpose of this coastal maintenance is to maintain a sufficient level of safety and to maintain the various functions of beach and dune areas. As a criterion for coastal erosion the movement of the 'coastline' is used. In this paper the definition of coastline is worked out more in detail.
