The Present State of the Adriatic Sea Sanitation Program

by Boris Kompare, Univ in Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Yugoslavia,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '91

Abstract:

Several consecutive years of frightening phenomena in the Adriatic Sea, which have made a great impact on the tourist economy, have demonstrated the need for rapid and effective sanitation measures. It was shown that the observed phenomena are more or less natural but yet out of control. Still, an overall amelioration of bathing resorts can be achieved with local (microscale) sanitation measures. The global, macroscale activities are progressing slowly due to financial, political, organizational, and operational difficulties.
