Abstract:

A prototype hybrid expert system is presented that selects geosynthetic materials and performs detailed designs for different geotechnical applications. An expert system is used to give advice to designers about the most appropriate geosynthetic material to apply for applications such as stabilization, reinforcement, separation, filtration and drainage. This expert system is linked to a data base of geosynthetic products. For detailed design with geosynthetics, algorithmic C language programs have been developed for various applications. This prototype system indicates the potential for integrating expert systems with design algorithms.
