Abstract:

Thin-walled cylindrical silos containing compacted bulk solids show a significant increase in strength over empty silos under meridional compression. A finite element model is used which models the solid as a Winkler foundation in three directions. The element is doubly-curved axisymmetric, and its accuracy is checked against several test problems involving elastic foundations. Results are given for cylinders under meridional compression.
