Abstract:

This paper presents a strategy where the design of a reinforced concrete structure is not only automated, but optimized. The strategy employs decomposition to subdivide the problem into 'system' and 'component' levels. The strategy also utilizes a variety of search techniques including continuous optimization, discrete optimization, heuristic search, and optimality criteria methods. The choice of technique for each subproblem is governed by the subproblem characteristics.
