Abstract:

The Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management is preparing for the transport of spend fuel by 1998 from commercial reactors to a monitored retrievable storage facility. The preparations include planning and implementation of technical and institutional activities. This paper provides an overview of OCRWMs transportation technical activities. The technical activities are concentrated on design, development, certification, and fabrication of transport casks; design, development, and construction of facilities to support transportation operation; and performing system studies such as investigation of the interface between the transportation system and the reactor cask loading facility and adjacent infrastructure. The cask designs are anticipated to be certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by 1994. The planning for development of support facilities and operation of the system has begun and the transportation system is planned to be operational by 1998.
