The freezing of soil water around a buried chilled pipeline leads to soil heaving, which is affected by the presence of the pipe. This process may eventually cause pipeline failure. The proposed paper attempts to simulate the Canada-France pipeline ground freezing experiment by a numerical method. The results of simulation of the temperature profiles agree well with the experimental measurements. Because of a lack of exact information on the confining conditions of the pipe in the longitudinal sense, it was decided to solve first two extreme pipe-confinement cases, i.e., the case of a free floating pipe and the case of a rigidly fixed pipe. It is considered that the true conditions will be located between these two limited cases.
