Abstract:

The use of field-applied polymer-modified mortars for adhering thin brick or tile to building exteriors has become increasingly common in the last decade. The latex-modified mortars can provide substantially greater shear and tensile bond strengths than traditional mortars. However, in the last several years we have observed and investigated a number of thin-set mortar failures. This paper discusses potential causes of thin-set mortar failures as they relate to several case studies.
