Abstract:

The ocean-based mariculture-OTEC pilot plant 'HOUYOU' was completed in March, 1989 and the at-sea test in Toyama Bay was carried out from July 18th until September 7th in 1989, while the cold water pipe was deployed off Himi, in Toyama Bay, the Sea of Japan in August, 1988. The paper presents the specification of the ocean-based mariculture-OTEC pilot plant, in particular the OTEC experimental facility installed in it, and some results of preparatory experiments and simulating analysis for the OTEC experimental facility. The objective of this five-year project is to evaluate the effect of artificial upwelling of nutrient-rich deep seawater on the enhancement of marine bio-productivity for an ocean-based system. The OTEC experimental facility represents a scale-down version of a practical OTEC plant for a self-sustaining ocean-based mariculture-OTEC system.
