Abstract: In this paper, an expression of water extractor ratio of a vortex tube has been obtained according to the principle of energy conservation and transformation; based on the feature of sediment particle settling in flow, the formula for estimating the width of opening slit on the top of the vortex tube has been derived from the point of view of kinetics; on the basis of flume data, the relatinship of sediment trapping efficiency of the tube and the method for determining its optimum diameter are given by means of multivariate regression analysis.
