Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the sediment function module of the computer program SAM. SAM is being developed as a product of the US Army Corps of Engineers Flood Control Channels Research Program. SAM contains a number of modules for calculating the hydraulic and sedimentation properties of flood control channels. The sediment function module contains seven of the more popular sediment discharge formulas and a data base in which several hundred observed sediment measurements are stored. The unique feature of the sediment function module is that it has the capability to give the user guidance on the selection of a sediment discharge formula to be used in the design of a flood control channel. This paper will give a brief description of how the guidance on sediment formula selection is given to the user of SAM and a sample execution of the sediment function module.
