Abstract:

This paper presents a methodology that uses optimization for designing a groundwater monitoring network. The methodology incorporates parameter estimation in conjunction with a numerical model of a groundwater system to develop the objective function and constraints used to determine the optimal location of a monitoring well. A one-dimensional contaminant transport problem is used as an example to illustrate the methodology.
