Abstract:

When the option of reprocessing has been selected, closing of the fuel cycle implies the return shipment of reprocessing wastes back to the country of origin of the spent fuel, in particular the vitrified high active waste (HAW). Depending on the interim storage conditions chosen in each concerned country, two main types of transportable casks will be needed for the glass: either a routine transport cask or a transportable storage cask. To meet those needs TRANSNUCLEAIRE has developed a new cask family called TN28V, based on its 10 years experience in spent fuel transport using forged steel dry casks. This paper gives a description of the different versions and configurations of the TN28V, as well as the main results of a drop test campaign recently carried out to quality its concept.
