Abstract:

Drainage pipes are an essential component of landfills. Even though their embedment conditions differ substantially from those of pipes for municipal utilities near the ground surface, it has been common practice in Germany to apply the ATV - procedures to the design of drainage pipes below some very high landfills. Since a number of structural pipe failures resulted from this design practice, it was considered mandatory to review the ATV - rules, especially their soil mechanics background and their input recommendations for analyses.
