Abstract:

A new design and manufacturing concept was developed by General Atomics for prestressed pressure pipe. With this new concept, patented in the U.S. and in the major industrialized nations, a cylindrical concrete core is cast against the interior surface of a high-strength sheet steel cylinder. However, instead of achieving prestress by helically wrapping the concrete core/steel cylinder with high-strength steel wire, a commentitious grout is pressure injected into the interface between the concrete core and steel cylinder. The pressurized grout material produces circumferential compressive stress in the concrete core and a circumferential tensile stress in the steel cylinder.
