Abstract:

Positioning is a crucial area in the successful integration of CAD data into the construction process. This paper looks at several areas of positioning using lasers and electromagnetic waves. Two currently available systems are studied, the scanning laser and laser bar code readers. The two systems studied are by Odetics and Caterpillar. Three positioning systems currently being studied at Virginia Tech are also presented. These include an Automated Position and Control System (which uses radio waves), a Laser Positioning System, and a CCD camera/laser diode system.
