Abstract:

Maintenance considerations during both the design and operational phases are very important to good tunnel maintenance. The use of proper materials able to withstand the rigorous environment found in most vehicular tunnels can reduce maintenance costs considerably. Proper engineering of slope treatments, drainage systems, and other approach design parameters, can also provide considerable savings in the maintenance operational budget. A good preventive maintenance program by operating personnel will reduce the future excessive major repair costs that would otherwise be incurred. Each of these areas is discussed briefly in this paper.
