Understanding Generator Static Excitation System

by Tushar Ghosh, P.U.D., United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Waterpower '89

Abstract:

This paper explains some of the basic terms and features associated with a static excitation system (SES) to enable non-specialists to specify it according to their requirements. A simple description of a SES is followed by explanation of various terms used in specifying it, e.g. redundancy, reactive droop compensation, negative excitation, etc. Required capabilities, ratings and protection considerations, including author's recommendations, are also discussed. The technical data associated with a typical SES of a conventional hydrogenerator is detailed for reference purpose.
