Abstract:

Ghost Development, owned and operated by TransAlta Utilities, is near the eastern margin of the Rocky Mountain Foothills, approximately 33 km northwest of Calgary, Alberta. The development was constructed in 1929 across the Bow River, immediately downstream from the confluence with the Ghost River, to generate hydroelectric power. This paper describes the comprehensive dam safety evaluation of the development. A brief description is also given of the subsequent study to determine the least cost method of implementing the modifications recommended by the evaluation.
