Analysis and Rehabilitation of Ambursen Dams

by Glen S. Bengtson, Warzyn Engineering Inc, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Waterpower '89

Abstract:

This paper deals with the investigation and analysis of two Ambursen dams located in the upper Midwest. These investigations revealed that the original design contained significant defects, which in some cases, result in low factors of safety. These design defects include a lack of reinforcing steel in the corbel area of the buttresses and in the buttresses themselves. The paper describes the analysis of these conditions and methods used to strengthen the structural components. The paper also discusses stability analyses for an Ambursen dam and the use of piezometers to verify uplift conditions.
