Abstract:

For installations that are already in operation, the following advantages are obtained from installing new electronic equipment: In the case that the dam or certain measuring stations are difficult to reach in extreme weather conditions (flood conditions or heavy snow). In the case that the dam control system can be equipped with a suitable automatic system to improve sensitivity and accuracy for the measurement of certain control values, or the facilitate the automatic data collection and storage of such values. In the case where the control system is required to report extraordinary occurrences in the performance of the dam. In this paper the main duties of the automatic monitoring systems are described by way of a specific example, and several important points are discussed in detail. The example discusses the Vasasca Arch Dam in Switzerland.
