Baseflow and Beta Distribution

Abstract: For water resources projects, design engineers are often required to separate total flow into baseflow and direct runoff. During such studies, baseflow is considered a crucial parameter; its speedy and accurate determination is essential for both economic and hydrologic reasons. An equation, in the form of a beta distribution, is developed which portrays the exact profile of baseflow curve and helps in determining the magnitude of baseflow. The equation is applicable for areas up to 2000 mi2 (or 5000 km2), and larger.
