Abstract:

Sediment movement and changes of bed levels in natural rivers are non-stationary processes. The design of protection works for structures against erosion should account for the time dependency as well as for the stochasticity of variables and the uncertainty of the models used to compute the erosion. Reliability theory allows to estimate failure probabilities and may help in certain cases to design hydraulic structures by stochastic simulation rather than by highly sophisticated models.
