Abstract:

The Energy Management and Maintenance Analysis (EMMA) model is used to maximize net revenues to Manitoba Hydro considering the operation of hydroelectric and thermal generation, generation maintenance, hydraulic characteristics of the reservoir/river system, domestic loads and external markets. EMMA is a modeling tool capable of modeling the operations of an interconnected, mixed hydro-thermal electrical utility. EMMA models are created by user supplied data. This paper describes the EMMA model in some detail discussing the overall structure of the model, the purpose and formulation of specific constraints, and the implementation of the model as a computer program.
