Abstract:

An optimization model, data system, and a series of user-friendly input/output screens (the HYDRopower Optimization Program, HYDROP) have recently been implemented at the Loveland Area Office (LAO) of the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) to help dispatchers efficiently manage and schedule the hydropower in the North-Platte River Basin. HYDROP produces hourly generation, and release schedules for each of the seven reservoirs for a time period up to thirty-six hours in the future subject to energy requirements, irrigation needs, and environmental and engineering constraints.
