Abstract:

Top-down procedures were proposed to construct four basement levels for a major high-rise building development in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Drilled caisson foundations were the preferred means of building support. A full scale test caisson program was established to evaluate the constructibility and the side friction capacity of the caissons. This program involved the testing of two caissons; one straight shaft, the other belled. Two tests were performed to represent differing subsurface conditions across the site. One test confirmed the preliminary side friction design assumptions, while the other allowed an increase in side friction capacity over the preliminary values.
