Development of Inelastic Reduction Factors to Provide an Elastic Design Procedure

Abstract:

R factor values can only be rationally selected when they are based on in part nonlinear inelastic dynamic analyses of building system types. However, it is informative to discuss the basic design methodology in terms of a pseudo dynamic approach and a simple masonry shear wall structure. This paper presents such a discussion, which relates to work in progress as part of an Applied Technology Council research study to evaluate R factors.
