by S. K. Ghosh, Portland Cement Assoc, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Seismic Engineering: Research and Practice

Abstract:

This paper discusses the special requirements in the 1988 edition of the Uniform Building Code concerning reinforced concrete structures resisting forces induced by earthquakes. The provisions fall under two broad categories: those specifying seismic design forces, and those prescribing seismic detailing requirements. The design forces are briefly discussed. The detailing requirements generally correspond with those contained in Appendix A to the 1983 edition of the ACI Building Code. Certain important differences between the two sets of provisions are pointed out. The 1988 UBC also incorporates certain features of the upcoming 1989 edition of the ACI Building Code. These features are also pointed out.
