Abstract:

A new method for evaluating the seismic resistance of existing buildings has been developed based on the historic performance of buildings in past major earthquakes. This methodology identifies the specific 'weak links' in a building that can cause life-threatening damage while taking into account the strength of all lateral force resisting elements regardless of their conformance to current code standards. It is expected that this methodology will draw some consistency to the evaluation process.
